ADVANCED EYE EXAMINATION RETINAL SCREENING AT HENRY SMITH + HAMYLTON

Digital Retinal Photography

Digital Retinal Photography enables us to record detailed high resolution digital images of the back of eyes. The advanced eye examination procedure enhances the routine full eye examination by providing magnified colour digital images of the retina.

These digital images record the exact appearance of the retina and are then securely stored electronically. This is a much more advanced and accurate system for recording the health of your eyes.

Comparing current images with previous digital records facilitates the early detection of any retinal changes that may indicate the need for referral to a specialist for further investigation. In these circumstances we can transmit the images directly to the consultant or hospital for analysis & assessment.

Nikon Fundus Digital Retinal Photography is available at our Uppingham Rd, Syston, Leicester Forest East, Wigston & Oadby Practices

Optomap Digital Imaging

The Optomap advanced retinal imaging exam shows nearly the whole of the retina at once. Some eye conditions (eg AMD, glaucoma, retinal tears/holes) and other health concerns (eg diabetes, hypertension, risk of stroke) can be found in the retina. Early detection is essential so that these can be successfully treated. It is quick, painless, and normally does not require dilation drops.

Optomap is available at our Leicester City Centre Practice.

OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography)

OCT is an extremely advanced health check for people of all ages. It is different from digital retinal photography as the scan sees under the retina to parts that cannot be seen by ordinary examination (the OCT uses light rather than sound waves, similar to an MRI scan). It covers a greater area as compared to a Digital Retinal Photo.

Many diseases, begin their damage in the layers of the retina below the surface and the OCT can view all these layers in cross section. It’s like slicing through a cake and revealing all the layers.

OCT is available at our Peterborough, Oadby & Leicester Forest East Practices

WHY ARE SIGHT TESTS SO IMPORTANT?

Many people think that a sight test is just about checking whether your vision needs correcting with glasses or contact lenses. But there are other important reasons to have regular eye tests.
An Eye Test is a vital check on the health of the eyes and can detect a range of common eye conditions.
Many of these, if found early, can be treated successfully, avoiding potential sight loss.
An eye test can also spot other health conditions such as high blood pressure, raised cholesterol, diabetes and increased risk of stroke.

WHO NEEDS A REGULAR EYE TEST?

Everybody! Sight tests should be part of everyone’s health care routine just like going to the dentist.
And remember, children are never too young to have an eye check. Special tests have been devised to help Optometrists examine even the youngest children.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE AN EYE TEST?

Most people should have their eyes checked every two years, unless advised otherwise by their Optometrist.
Certain groups may need their eyes checked more frequently. These include: People with a family history of glaucoma, anyone aged over 70 and, diabetics.
Speak to your Optometrist for individual advice.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING AN EYE TEST?

Eye test appointments usually last 30 to 40 minutes. Your Optometrist will tailor the examination according to your individual circumstance, taking into account factors such as your age, medical history and lifestyle.
Tests performed during your eye exam might include: using a retinal camera or ophthalmoscope to examine the retina, blood vessels and nerves at the back of the eye, assessing your visual acuity by asking you to read letters from a Snellen chart and measuring the pressure inside your eye.
